Oily Skincare Routine

Oily skin can be difficult to manage – especially if your skin naturally overproduces sebum. Using too many exfoliating products can dry out your skin, whilst too little won’t alleviate the excess oil. Establishing a suitable routine for your skin, and sticking to it on a consistent basis, is key to helping manage oily skin.

In this guide, we talk you through the best oily skincare routine, step-by-step, and complete with some of our most-effective skincare products, to ensure you’re equipped to manage the effects of your oily skin.

Why Is an Oily Skincare Routine Important?

Creating a consistent oily skincare routine is important to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy. Oily skin can make your skin greasy to the touch, and you may find your makeup won’t stick throughout the day. On top of this, oily skin can lead to blackheads and breakouts if left untreated. For some people, this can affect their confidence, with long-term effects such as scarring or pitting from acne.

Your Step-By-Step Guide to An Oily Skincare Routine

Now for the all-important oily skincare routine steps... Our guide takes you through the 5 essential steps to getting excess oil under control, plus some of our most recommended skincare products for oily skin!

Step 1: Cleanse Your Skin

Cleanse your skin A.M and P.M! Cleansing twice daily removes any environmental pollutants which build up on the skin during the day, as well as oils and dead skin cells which are produced overnight. For oily skin, cleansing is especially important, since cleaning out your pores is vital to preventing blackheads and pimples from forming.

Use a lightweight cleanser, such as Eminence’s Acne Advanced Cleansing Foam for your face, or the Clear Skin Probiotic Cleanser, containing cooling cucumber and tea tree oil. The natural ingredients contained in these products ensure no harsh chemicals are used which can irritate or dry out the skin.

Step 2: Utilise A Toner for Oily Skin

Oily skin toner products should be alcohol-free, cleansing the skin and tightening pores without stripping your skin of its essential moisture. Toners are a lightweight, liquid product, making them perfect for oily skin types.

Use a toner after cleansing and patting dry your face, applying the product all over your face and neck with a cotton pad to rebalance your skin’s ph; this can then be left on the skin.

Salicylic acid and astringents such as witch hazel are key ingredients for a good skin toner for oily skin, exfoliating and removing dead skin cells from pores without any abrasive methods which can further damage the skin.

Step 3: Apply Treatment

For skin that is suffering from breakouts or acne induced by excess oil, stronger skincare products for oily skin may be necessary.

Retinol treatments are an over-the-counter alternative to retinoids (which require a prescription), however, both treatments are derived from Vitamin A and are used to treat a variety of skin concerns.

Retinol can be used to treat acne-prone oily skin, and should be used at night time, a couple of times a week. It is important not to over-use retinol and dry out your skin, as this can cause your skin to increase its oil production in an attempt to rehydrate itself.

Step 4: Use Moisturisers for Oily Skin

After cleansing, toning and even treating your skin with retinol, it is essential to replace all that lost moisture with a moisturiser.

Replacing moisture doesn’t mean replacing oil, however! By using a suitable moisturiser for oily skin, such as an oil-free, non-comedogenic, or water-based moisturiser, you can rehydrate your skin in the right way; use a moisturiser both day and night, following a cleanser.

Eminence’s Stone Crop Hydrating Gel (an oil-free gel moisturiser) will leave skin feeling silky smooth, whilst the Clear Skin Probiotic Moisturiser is an ultra-light product designed for daily use.

Step 5: Make Use of Hydrating Creams

Whilst you should use hydrating products for oily skin with care so as not to clog your pores further, hydrating creams can be great for replenishing moisture in your skin. This means your sebaceous glands don’t have to produce as much oil to counteract dehydrated skin, which helps to regulate your oil production over time.

A lightweight, oil-free hydrating cream for oily skin can be used overnight, as and when it is needed – for instance, following the use of a mask or exfoliant which can be particularly drying. Hydrating creams may also be gel-based, which can create a mattifying effect – perfect for oily skin.
