Acne Cleansing Routine

We recently wrote a blog on how a simple 3 step routine can help all types of acne from the occasional breakout to more severe acne concerns.

In this blog, we want to dive into acne and show you how a regular, acne cleansing routine can help keep your skin clearer for a more perfect looking complexion.

Step 1: The Importance of Cleansing

Acne is caused by an overproduction of oil from the sebaceous glands found in the hair follicles in your skin. This excess oil or sebum mixes with dead skin cells clogging the hair follicle. When this happens underneath the surface of the skin it can cause a whitehead and when this happens where the skin is open it causes a blackhead or comedone.

A regular acne cleansing routine using effective skincare for acne prone skin will help to balance the production of sebum and help remove excess dead skin cells. Ideally, you want to cleanse your skin up to 2 times per day. If you have moderate to severe acne be careful not to overstimulate your skin with a vigorous cleansing routine, instead gently cleanse your skin with light circular movements. Use warm water that is neither too hot nor too cold and look for cleansers that will hydrate your skin and not strip your skin leaving it feeling dry and sore.

Eminence has two cleansers that are ideal for acne cleansing – Clear Skin Probiotic Cleanser, a gentle gel cleanser with probiotics, tea tree and cucumber. This cleanser soothes inflamed skin, balances oil production and deep cleanses whilst leaving your skin hydrated. Acne Advanced Cleansing Foam is a light foamy cleanser with a fresh smell, containing encapsulated salicylic acid this cleanser is designed for more severe acne concerns. Also formulated to hydrate the skin and balance oil production both cleansers will help to reduce inflammation, heal existing acne blemishes and help prevent the frequency and severity of future breakouts.

Step 2: Don’t Hide Your Skin - Use an Acne Cleansing Face Mask

A face mask is a highly concentrated treatment that can help to improve a variety of different skin conditions and concerns and can be one of the best skincare products for acne treatment. Face masks come in a variety of guises and can contain ingredients such as kaolin clay, charcoal and stonecrop. The different ingredients in different acne cleansing face masks offer a variety of benefits to the skin, these ingredients are absorbed deeply into the skin, healing and treating the effects of acne. Acne sufferers know that acne not only causes spots but can cause scarring, pigmentation, enlarged pores and inflamed skin. Using a face mask such as Clear Skin Probiotic Masque or Acne Advanced Clarifying Masque you can treat all the effects of acne, making face masks a multi-tasking gem!

There is a variety of different types of acne blemish so look for the face mask that best suits your type of acne. Some common types of acne spots include;

Comedones (Blackheads)

These look like little black dots in your skin, they form within our pores and hair follicles and turn black when sebum and dead skin cells oxidise with air. Look for an acne cleansing face mask that has pore cleansing properties, gently exfoliates the skin and balances oil production. Apply a thin layer of Eminences Rosehip & Maize Exfoliating Masque and gently scrub into the skin. Leave for a few minutes then apply a thin layer of Eminences Snow Mushroom & Reishi Masque directly over the top. Leave for 5-10 minutes then remove with a damp cloth.

Papules/Nodules/Cysts

All of these types of acne blemishes appear as bumps underneath the skin. Papules are little bumps that look red and inflamed and can feel quite sore. Nodules are larger, harder feeling bumps that can feel very tender. Cysts are the most severe; they contain pus, are situated under the skin but have no superficial white head. Acne cleansing face masks can help to minimise the intensity of this type of acne blemish and any of Eminences face masques for acne if used 2-3 times per week, will help you see improvements in your complexion. If you fancy a spicy treat for your skin and you are not too sensitive, try one of Eminences “hot” masques such as the Hungarian Herbal Mud Treatment. This masque is formulated to fight bacteria, stimulate healing and detoxify the skin, the spicy heat enhances the benefits of this treatment masque.

Step 3: The Situation with Hydration

Acne skin tends to go hand in hand with excess oil production and because the skin feels “oily” acne sufferers often skip the hydration step in their acne cleansing routine. However, our skin needs a drink and even oily skin can be lacking in water and hydration. Look for lightweight moisturisers and skincare for acne prone skin as these products will be formulated to balance oil production whilst adding vital hydration soothing and protecting your skin.
