Gorgeous Destinations can be a Skincare Nightmare

Holiday season is upon us and that is something to be truly excited about, particularly as we have had one of the wettest springs on record in the UK!! Not wanting to put a damper on the excitement of holiday season but a sudden change in weather can wreak havoc on the skin as well as different environmental conditions (including pollution), you will also most likely be eating a variety of foods (including junk food) that your body is not used to. This is all without taking the actual journey to and from your destination into consideration, when you are travelling your daily skincare tends to be put on the back burner for a while to say the least!

Stress caused by travelling can also have a negative impact on your skin by disrupting your body’s equilibrium. 1. Equip yourself with your favourite cleanser

A facial cleanser is so important and makes sure that at the end of the day your skin is devoid of environmental stressors such as dirt, pollution and other impurities. Unclean skin is a definite no-no wherever you are in the world. Eminence has a truly impressive collection of cleansers, we adore the Kombucha Microbiome Foaming Cleanser for travel. It is a unique liquid to foam cleanser featuring micellar technology along with pre, pro and postbiotics to help maintain your skins’ microbiome. It gently removes impurities without over-stripping the skin to reveal a fresh, clean and healthy-looking complexion.

2. Carry a face mist

This is an absolute must for everyone, whether you are going on a weekend trip or a long, tropical vacay, never forget your facial mist. It is hydrating and will keep your skin refreshed throughout your trip. When you spritz it on your face you are adding moisture to your skin which great for all skin types but especially good for dry and combination skin which is especially useful if you are travelling to a colder climate. It’s also perfect to quickly cool down your face in hot weather leaving you feeling refreshed and ready to see those sights! Eminence has 5 wonderful mists or toniques which come in a spray bottle, Lime Refresh Tonique, Mangosteen Revitalising Mist, Neroli Age Corrective Hydrating Mist, Soothing Chamomile Tonique and Stone Crop Hydrating Mist. These mists are all fantastic and are very effective on their target areas as they have 85% to 95% active ingredients. The Stone Crop is a really great all rounder for all skin types and is hydrating and refreshing, the healing Stone Crop plant soothes irritations and reduces pigmentation making it ideal for travel.

3. Moisturiser is a must

A good moisturiser is an absolute must to help maintain your skins health. It keeps skin hydrated which helps prevent breakouts and skin issues caused by excessive dryness. Remember to moisturise your skin before you board your flight, the air inside planes is drying and can damage your skin. Choose a moisturiser that works well with your target skin issues, Apricot Whip Moisturiser is a great hydrating moisturiser for normal to dry and combination skin types. Apricot and carrot juice infuse the skin with healthy doses of vitamins A, B, C and D giving the skin a youthful glow. Another great product to take on holiday in place of a serum is the Superfood Booster Powder which mixes into a creamy moisturiser such as the Apricot Whip to give additional brightening benefits and a boost of antioxidants. There is also the added benefit that with a powder, you’re not going to have any cosmetic bag spillages to clear up!!

You could also think about taking a good facial oil as an alternative to moisturiser, facial oils are great to soften, nourish and balance skin for a healthy-looking glow meaning your skin looks amazing. We would recommend Camellia Glow Solid Face Oil which melts into cleansed skin and absorbs deeply. It is brimming with luxurious botanical oils – Camellia Hemp Seed and Marula – which replenish the skin with vitamins, essential fatty acids and protective antioxidants. It aids collagen production, encourages cell turnover and enhances the skin’s ability to retain moisture to reveal glowing, supple and rejuvenated skin. It is a solid oil that turns liquid upon application to the skin again perfect for travel as risk of leakages in the travel bag are less likely! What’s not to love about that!!

4. Hydrate from the inside and avoid alcohol (but if you can’t be good be careful!!)

Dehydration during travel is extremely common, with air travel one of the things to keep in mind with hydration is that the humidity within the plane is very low. As a response you end up losing a lot of fluids without even knowing it, so it’s critical that you try and stay hydrated especially on long flights. In hot weather, it’s especially common for people to become dehydrated after spending all day in the sun or exercising outside. A few quick tips for staying hydrated are to always have your own water bottle with you, cut back on the caffeine, look out for physical signs of dehydration such as dark urine, headache, dizziness and fatigue, (drink more water if you experience any of these symptoms) and while you’re on holiday and having fun just watch the alcohol consumption!! Alcohol is a diuretic, it causes your body to remove fluids from your blood through your renal system which includes the kidneys, ureters and bladder at a much quicker rate than other liquids. If you don’t drink enough water with alcohol, you can become dehydrated quickly. If you are determined to party make sure you go into the night well hydrated and having eaten a nutritious meal high in vitamins, protein and healthy fats and try drinking a glass of water for every alcoholic drink you have. Taking these measures will not only you and your skin hydrated but will also lessen the effects of the dreaded hangover. Your skin can become dry, itchy, dull, uneven and wrinkled when dehydrated so probably a good idea to take steps to prevent it!!

5. Carry a good eye cream

Issues with hydration, air dryness and tiredness can all take their toll on our eyes. If you want to keep your eyes looking their best it’s important to have a great eye cream on hand. We absolutely love Hibiscus Ultra Lift Eye Cream, it comes with a cooling, stainless steel rollerball applicator which is so easy to use when on the run. It rapidly de-puffs tired eyes, smooths wrinkles and minimises the appearance of dark under eye circles. The skin around the eyes appears instantly tightened and lifted.

6. Don’t skip on your beauty sleep!

It can be difficult to get enough sleep when on your travels, there is the time during the actual travel, getting comfortable in a new bed, different noises and different temperatures to name a few issues. Most importantly, sleep is the time when your body repairs itself and this is as true for your epidermis as it is for your brain or muscles. During sleep your blood flow increases and skin rebuilds its collagen and repairs damage from UV exposure, reducing wrinkles and age spots. So be sure to cleanse your face before bed, use a good night moisturiser and as much sleep as you can while on your travels. Monoi Age Corrective Night Cream for Face and Neck will really get you in the holiday mood, Monoi is a fragrant Tahitian Oil made from Gardenia Flowers Soaked in Coconut Oil so the scent is heavenly and will really get you in the holiday mood!! This deeply hydrating night cream will nourish and replenish your skin’s appearance overnight and leave your skin appearing finer, smoother and more youthful with our exclusive Anti-Ageing Stem Cell Complex containing Argan Stem Cells and Nutmeg Seeds.

7. Make SPF a priority

SPF has considerable benefits for your skin, notably protecting it from UV rays that cause wrinkles, loss of firmness, dullness, uneven pigmentation and even cancer. We would recommend Red currant Protective Moisturiser SPF 40, this SPF moisturiser hydrates, invigorates and promotes the look of elasticity. The Red Currant is a good source of vitamin c to reduce the signs of ageing and antioxidant. It also gives a refreshingly cool sensation from sustained release tea tree oil which helps reduce the signs of breakouts. As a result it performs overtime making it ideal for traveling, not only does it protect the skin from the sun but refreshes it and helps control the production of sebum which is great in warmer climes when production can go into overdrive.

8. Hydrate those lips

In the cold weather, cold, dry air causes lips to become severely dried out and chapped. Add in a windy day to a cold day and your lips can especially become at risk of chapping. The warmer weather can be equally cruel to our lips, the dry heat that beats down on our face can cause the lips to become swollen, dry and chapped not to mention the potential of burning on the more delicate skin on our lips. It’s a good idea to have a lip balm with an SPF as a result of this when off visiting sunnier climes and particularly important on the ski slopes when the sun reflects off the snow. Rosehip and Lemongrass Lip Balm SPF 15 moisturises and protects dry lips and comes in a handy hydrating lip balm stick. It contains Zinc Oxide providing a natural SPF 15 to defend against harmful UV exposure. Soothing Rosehip oil relieves dryness and rejuvenating lavender restores softness.

9. Be prepared for acne

Our pores are sensitive and don’t always behave themselves on holiday! They react to all of the numerous skin challenges travelling presents. From weather changes to time zone switches and dehydration here are some skincare solutions for clear, vibrant skin. Eminence Clear Skin Collection from the Vitaskin Solutions is a brilliant way of both preventing and clearing problem skin leaving a radiant complexion. This collection of clarifying and refining skincare solutions uses probiotics, Tea Tree Oil and Willow Bark to provide visible results. The Clear Skin Starter Set is a great kit to take on holiday, it contains travel sized Clear Skin Cleanser, Masque, Moisturiser and Serum so is a complete Clear Skin facial in a handy travel pack. This collection will balance the skin without stripping it so perfect for when skin has been left unsettled by the travel process.

10. Skip makeup as much as possible

Avoiding makeup as much as possible while on holiday is a great idea. With skin that is already stressed, removing physical blockages from the surface of the skin can help clear pores and improve makeup-related acne. Wearing make-up on holiday can be tough anyway, especially when the heat from the summer sun tends to cause it to run, smudge and mysteriously evaporate from your face! As most time on a holiday overseas is spent around or in the pool or sea, it seems a waste to put makeup on; particularly as it's so hot and it might not last. Some cosmetics can make skin more sensitive to the sun's rays, so be careful if you are wearing makeup in the day in case you end up sunburnt! Considering all this and the fact that taking a break from makeup can help the skin repair itself a holiday might be a great time to ditch the makeup completely for a week or two, you’re unlikely to see anyone you know!!!

So, What Should I take and What Should I Leave?

Hydration should always be a priority on holiday and travelling, stick to hydrating cleansers and moisturisers. Your final skincare step should always be SPF, along with antioxidants SPF is the ultimate way to protect your skin. We are all different and some people travel light and some rather more heavily!! Where you are able, decant products into travel size containers so you can continue with your routine and have a really good cosmetic bag that fits everything in and allows you to find things easily.

Above all have fun and relax, make sure to moisturise and protect from the sun!
