What Are Dark Spots?

Many of us will experience uneven skin tone at some point, especially as the sun, hormones and injury are amongst the main causes! The question is how do we best treat these dark spots and patches of skin at home with products?

You may see small darker spots appear on your face and/or body or you may have larger patches and areas of uneven deeper skin tone. Darker skin or Hyperpigmentation is caused by the over-stimulation of our pigment producing cells called Melanocytes. Melanocytes are triggered by the sun for example, and become stimulated to produce melanin or skin pigment, the extra melanin is designed to help protect our skin and in normal circumstances once the trigger disappears then the melanocytes cease the extra production of melanin.

For example, when you sunbathe, the tan is the result of those melanocytes producing extra melanin to protect your skin from the sun! When you stop sunbathing (the sun is the trigger here!) the melanocytes stop melanin production and eventually your tan fades and your skin returns to its usual colour. BUT if you sunbathe time and time again the melanocytes can get over-stimulated and continue to produce melanin all the time, not just when you are out in the sun for protection and this can result in darker areas and spots of hyperpigmentation.

Skincare Treatment Options

But do not panic just yet as there are some very effective and simple ways to treat hyperpigmentation that can be added to your skin care repertoire both at home and at your favourite Eminence salon.

Let’s first go back to how you get those pesky darker areas of skin tone…remember it was by the over production of melanin from over stimulated melanocytes. Therefore, to help treat and lighten these areas of hyperpigmentation we need to slow down or stop the over production of melanin in the first place. Eminence does this with a variety of lightening ingredients from plants, such as Stone Crop, Bearberry, Licorice Root and their award-winning Natural Hydroquinone Alternative.

These botanical actives are found in the Bright Skin range and can successfully brighten and lighten existing hyperpigmentation and also help to prevent future hyperpigmentation from forming.

How Does Skincare Lighten Hyperpigmentation

Eminence’s Bright Skin products work by inhibiting the melanin production from the melanocytes. Natural Hydroquinone Alternative is made from African Potato and Tara Tree extracts. It is a natural alternative to conventional hydroquinone and has no side effects unlike conventional hydroquinone. By slowing down the production of melanin the areas of hyperpigmentation become lighter and brighter reducing the appearance and intensity of the areas of darker skin tone.

Along with unique blends of lightening botanicals and anti-inflammatory ingredients the Bright Skin range is a popular choice for treating uneven skin tone issues. I myself have successfully treated a couple of areas of hyperpigmentation on my forehead with the Bright Skin range. It took about 2 to 3 months and I remember one day noticing my hyperpigmentation had gone completely! (Debbie Polden). For others it seems to lighten gradually and in most cases to a point where you cannot see a difference in skin tone.

The Bright Skin Range Clinical (in vivo trial) Results:

51% reduction in melanin production

29% reduction in the color of dark spots

In just 3 months!

When Should You Treat Your Darker Skin Tone?

The best time to treat hyperpigmentation with a skin brightening line is in the autumn and winter months. This is because the amount of UV exposure and the intensity of the UV rays are much lower than they are in the spring and summer months. When you treat hyperpigmentation, you must and I mean must, wear sun protection, remember the sun is one of the main causes of dark spots so if you don’t protect your skin from the sun, it will negate the good results you can achieve from your brightening skincare routine.

To help prevent hyperpigmentation coming back or forming in the future, continue to wear sun protection, ideally a mineral SPF, and continue to use a skincare line with anti-inflammatory and brightening ingredients similar to those found in our Bright Skin range or even our Stone Crop products.

Professional Salon Treatments

If you combine a daily home care routine with regular trips to your Eminence therapist you may see the results faster than with just a home care routine every day. Your therapist can treat your skin to a brightening facial peel and help to stimulate cell renewal and healing within your skin. One of our favourite treatments is our professional Yam & Pumpkin Enzyme Peel, it can help to even out hyperpigmentation, brighten your complexion and leave your skin glowing.
