Spring Skincare

As we say cheerio to winter and hello to spring it is a good time to assess your skin care products and introduce a spring skin care routine.

Below are 7 spring into spring skin tips to get your complexion ready for the new season.

Update Your Skincare Routine

The cold winter months can leave your skin feeling drier, lacking in moisture and rougher in texture due in part, to colder temperatures and central heating stripping your skin of its natural lipids and moisture. The spring brings warmer weather, possibly higher humidity, longer days and sunshine, so it is a good time to re-evaluate and update your skincare routine.

Because the winter can strip your skin of moisture, you often need to lock in those vital lipids to keep the moisture in your skin and richer, creamier products help to do this for you. As the temperatures warm up and the humidity increases through your skin produce more of those natural lipids helping it to maintain that moisture within therefore reducing the need for those richer products. A spring skincare option could be to opt for gentler or lighter cleansers, serums and moisturisers, the lightweight textures feel more comfortable on the skin and you won’t need to lock in that moisture as much as in the wintertime!

Continue Exfoliating

The winter may have left your skin feeling drier and rougher so a deep exfoliation at the start of spring can help to remove the dead surface layer to reveal a fresh glowing complexion ready for the new season. You could choose to go to an Eminence salon or spa and treat yourself to a professional organic peel which will deeply exfoliate and renew your skin, or you could use Rosehip & Maize Exfoliating Masque followed by one of our Vitaskin Exfoliating Peels to suit your skin for a gentler yet very effective treatment at home.

Once you have removed the winter buildup of dead skin you should continue to exfoliate your skin regularly to maintain a fresh glowing complexion and smoother texture and the Vitaskin peels are the perfect option for spring skincare routines. The gentle mixes of alpha and beta hydroxy acids resurface the skin whilst treating the skin with nutrients and botanical actives. They are not too harsh and can be used 2-3 times per week; making them a perfect option for your spring skincare routine. Remember to use sun protection after using a peel to make sure your skin is protected from UV damage.

Prepare for Breakouts

We often find that the change of a season also brings some changes in our skin, when we go from the winter to the spring, we can find those changes include more frequent breakouts. As the weather warms up it can trigger our skin to produce more lipids (oil) and more perspiration, both can lead to more breakouts. Another cause of breakouts can be the addition of a chemical SPF product to our spring skincare routine. Chemical sun protection products often create a film on the skin, trapping in heat, perspiration and oil and blocking pores.

To help reduce breakouts ensure your daily spring skincare routine includes cleansing twice a day, exfoliating 2-3 times per week, you could also include a face masque 1-2 times per week to enhance your spring skincare routine and make sure you use a mineral SPF product selection with non-nano zinc oxide instead of chemical SPF products.

Trade-In Richer Products for Lighter Options

We have mentioned that warmer weather encourages your skin to produce more of its own natural lipids, but the warmer weather can also help keep vital hydration in the skin preventing it from evaporating away, which keeps the skin hydrated as well as moisturised.
Choosing lightweight products can be a more effective choice for the springtime and often feel nicer on the skin and not so heavy or clogging!

Try using a lighter weight moisturiser, gel moisturiser or hydrator within your spring skincare routine. These lighter textures will still protect, hydrate and moisturise your skin but won’t feel too rich on your skin. You could choose liquid serums over creamy serums for a lighter, faster absorbing application and lighter feeling. Another option could be to use a concentrate instead of a moisturiser which you can apply either on its own or underneath your daily mineral SPF protection.

Ensure Your Skin Remains Hydrated

Did you know warmer climates with higher humidity levels can actually help to maintain more hydrated skin! This is because the higher the humidity, the lower the evaporation of your natural hydration (hyaluronic acid) from your skin. But you shouldn’t rely on humidity to help hydrate your skin! Look for products such as serums, treatments, masques and moisturisers that contain hyaluronic acid (HA) especially multi-weight HA which is even more effective! HA can hold 1000 times its own weight in water and is a vital component of your skin's structure, when your skin has plenty of HA it will feel smooth, plumped and hydrated.

Not only should you use spring skincare products to maintain hydration in your skin but you should also make sure your body is hydrated with plenty of water and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Bring on the Protection with Sun Protection SPF products

90% of skin ageing comes from UV damage! To keep your skin healthy, younger looking and vibrant you need to invest in SPF protection, but not just any protection make sure you choose a non-nano, silicone free mineral SPF protection product and ideally an organic sun cream. Chemical SPF products are heavy, can feel greasy, trap heat and perspiration and can block pores.

They work by absorbing the UV rays preventing them from reaching the skin, mineral SPF products create a shield on the skin, they do not trap heat and sweat and won’t clog your pores, . They work by reflecting away the UV rays – a bit like millions of tiny mirrors on your skin! Many chemical SPF products are linked to ocean reef damage whereas mineral SPF products with zinc oxide can be reef safe products, making them an ideal addition to your spring skincare routine.

Eminence Organic Skincare is proud to offer daily SPF protection with reef safe moisturisers for the face and body. Remember even on a cloudy day you need to wear SPF protection and with four daily organic SPF face cream options to choose from, there is a safe, effective SPF moisturiser for everyone.

Refresh Your Make-up

We have spoken about the benefits of opting for lighter skincare products and spring is a great time to look at your make-up selection too. Just like your spring skincare, you can look for water-based foundations and formulas and mineral powders that could also contain mineral SPF protection! Make-up can be one of those products that aren’t always used every day, you may have a selection of eye shadows or blushers where your favourites get used first with some of the others hanging around for a lot longer. Take a look at your make-up expiry dates and check to see if any are out of date, if they are throw them out as make-up can be the perfect place for bacteria to hide!

Another great spring skin tip is to give your entire make-up brush selection a really good wash, although this should be a regular occurrence a good spring clean never hurt anyone!
