Don't Forget About Me
When we think about skincare, we generally think about the face, but we should be careful not to forget about the body as it is covered in skin also and that skin needs some TLC too. So, in this blog we are going to concentrate on the body and look at the best skincare for the body!
The Body Matter Too!
Firstly, one of the great things about Eminence products is that they are so versatile, eye creams can be used on the lips, face creams on the hands, face masques on the feet and so on! Most of our products can be used on different parts of the body and can be lots of fun to experiment with. But of course, Eminence also has a great range of products specifically formulated for the body to treat all sorts of skin concerns from breakouts and dryness to ageing and rough texture. So, let’s explore the different skin care options we have for the body and why your body may need them!
Scrub a Dub Dub!
Most of us will have experienced some dry skin somewhere on our bodies at some point. It may be dry elbows or heels, rough textured knees or in some cases little bumps on the backs of arms or legs called Keratosis Pilaris! Although these rough areas or bumpy areas are usually harmless you can help to smooth out the roughness and treat the bumps with regular exfoliation. Both dry, rough flaky skin and keratosis pilaris will result in a build up of dead skin or keratin. By using a gentle body scrub 1-2 times per week on the whole body or just the affected areas will help to remove the build up of dead skin and help to leave your skin feeling smoother and looking more youthful.
The top layer of your skin is called the Stratum Corneum, the skin cells in this layer are dead cells made up of the protein, keratin. When your skin is functioning as it should this layer is a thin layer that helps to protect your skin and the live cells in the layers underneath. As your skin is continually making new cells, the old dead cells in the stratum corneum should fall away naturally but sometimes this doesn’t happen as quickly or as effectively as it should… this is when you get a build up of dead skin cells leading to a dull, rough even flaky textured skin on the surface. There are lots of reasons you may experience this build up of dead skin cells but when it happens, don’t worry as a gentle body scrub or polish could be just the solution you need.
What To Look For In A Scrub
Look for body scrubs that also help to treat your skin, they may include granules of sugar, salt, nuts or even coffee. A tip here is to find a scrub that isn’t too rough on your skin, some scrubs contain larger granules and can be a little too aggressive. Most body scrubs have gorgeous scents from minty fresh smells to fruity, tropical scents. Choose the one you like the most and if you can find an option with natural aromas as artificial fragrance can actually be one of the causes of dead skin build up in the first place! Once you have chosen your scrub, another great tip is to use your body scrub in the shower. Generally, it’s best to dampen your skin, then turn your shower away from your body, apply the scrub to your body and with gentle circular movements work the granules into the skin to slough away the dead skin. Don’t be too aggressive a nice gentle massage is all you need for just a few minutes. Any area’s that are a little rougher you can spend a little longer on. Once you have finished scrubbing just rinse off under the shower and then apply a great body lotion or oil right afterwards.
Hydrate, Moisturise, Heal and Repair
Just like your face, your body needs moisture and hydration. Moisture is where you infuse your skin with oils and lipids to replenish any natural oils and lipids that your skin may have lost, and hydration replaces any lost water from your skin. Your skin needs both, and a loss of either can be caused by weather, age, diet and even your products! Your skin naturally produces lipids to keep it moisturised and hyaluronic acid to keep your skin hydrated. Even if you have plenty of lipids and hyaluronic acid treating your skin to some extra from your body lotion or body oil is not going to hurt!
There are many different options for hydrating and moisturising your body, from lighter body lotions to richer body oils. You may have a dehydrated skin and need a lighter body milk or lotion or if your skin is drier and needs more moisture you can opt for a body oil or solid body oil. We love our newer Yuzu Solid Body Oil with it’s tropically citrus scent and luxurious feel, it is so moisturising and hydrating. If you really want to indulge you can apply a lighter body lotion first such as Strawberry Rhubarb Hyaluronic Body Lotion and then a body oil on top to lock in that hydration.
