Earth Day

What is Earth Month?

The starting point for Earth Month was Earth Day which is held on 22nd April every year since it’s creation in the US in the early seventies. US senator and environmentalist Gaylord Nelson started Earth Day after the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill and following on from its success Earth Month was started in 2013. It’s a time when environmental issues take centre stage and each Earth Day has a theme. 2024 was Planet vs. Plastics, the goal of this day was to reduce plastic production by 60% by 2040. During Earth Month progress made in environmental protection is celebrated and it’s also a time to reflect and think about action needed to address the climate crisis and the environmental challenges that remain.

Top Tips for a more Sustainable Skincare Routine: 1. Use products which have natural, organic ingredients

What you put on your skin is entirely your decision so while you are making sure to use products that are right for your skin type it is also incredibly important to make sure the products have been organically or sustainably sourced. It’s easy to do a bit of fact checking, products that use approved ingredients will have the backing of certification. Eminence certifications include most Beauty Without Bunnies, BCorporation.net, usda.gov (USDA Organic), demeter.net (Biodynamic Certification) among many more. Just a couple of examples of the lovely organic products available from Eminence are Apricot Whip Moisturizer which revitalises the complexion with pure apricot and carrot juice. It’s infused with healthy doses of vitamins A, B, C and D and the age-defying properties of apricot will enrich and nourish your skin, giving it the appearance of a youthful glow. Stone Crop Serum is an intense hydrator that relieves the appearance of signs of ageing as a result of its super antioxidant benefits. It’s suitable for all skin types including sensitive and pigmentation.

2. Recycle and reuse

There are so many ways to either recycle or reuse packaging or pots that your favourite products arrive in. By doing this, you are preventing the plastic from entering our water ways and into our oceans and adding to the pollution problem. Always check if the packaging is made from recycled plastics as well as looking out for it being recyclable.

All Eminence product boxes are recyclable, made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified material and printed with eco-friendly inks, wherever possible, containers made from recyclable plastic are used and all packing boxes are reused or recycled. Even the packing chips are made of 100% biodegradable corn that dissolves harmlessly in water and eco-friendly software system means less printed invoices.

3. Reduce your water usage

We’re all guilty of leaving the tap on while brushing our teeth or letting the shower run while it warms up, but these things can have a big impact even if they are only every now and then rather than a daily occurrence. Just turning off the tap or running the shower for less time can really make an impact on saving water which is so vital.

4. Avoid fast beauty

By this I mean the quick fix solutions such as non-biodegradable wipes and other one-use products and tools. Go for natural ear buds, re-usable tools and higher quality products that last longer so you are not throwing away as much packaging. This can really have a positive impact on our consumption and as a result our environment. Another benefit to this is cost, as the lifecycle of these products is a lot longer so the need to shop for them is reduced so we spend less!!

5. Think about what your tools are made of

Similar to the point above, the tools and utensils we use to apply our beauty products such as brushes, sponges and bristles are often made of plastic. These will wear down over time and need to be disposed of. This usually ends up being land fill but even worse than this it can end up in the oceans as microplastic particles which can have a devastating effect. Try to use bamboo utensils and eco-sponges which can significantly reduce the amount of harmful waste we produce each year and so have a big impact on society as a whole.

One Small Step For Beauty, One Giant Leap For Mankind!!

These small steps won’t really have a massive impact on our day-to-day routines or lives and once good habits have been formed they are extremely easy to maintain. They can have a huge impact on the health of the planet for which we all need to take responsibility. By doing all we can to minimise the impact our habits have on the earth now, we are reducing the need to take more drastic action later on.

Simply being careful about spending your money with companies that do place their impact on the environment and society can make a difference and Eminences company mission says it all:

To enhance your wellness naturally through extraordinary products and extraordinary service.

Further to this Eminences promise is:

Our promise is to deliver happiness and extraordinary service by providing the healthiest and most effective skin care products. We are committed to protecting the future of our planet through our green practices - We plant a tree for every product sold

World Earth Day and Month shine a spotlight on our negative behaviour and make us think about the impact we could be having on our planet. If we can all play a part, however small, in slowing down the harmful effects of human pollution on the planet, then everything in the future starts to look a bit more positive, hopeful and brighter.
