AGEING SKIN & How to Treat it
WHAT CAUSES OUR SKIN TO AGE?
We’re constantly in search of the elusive "Fountain of Youth" and the answer to a common question: what causes the skin to age? While we have yet to find the one magic antidote, there are certain things we can do to influence the appearance of our skin.
Skin is a living organ - our body's largest organ in fact. Our skin is a reactive mechanism; in other words, it responds to internal and external factors. What we put into and on our bodies, along with our environment, stress levels and sleeping patterns have an impact on the skin.
The ageing process is affected or influenced by Biological, Chronological and Environmental factors.
Biological: This is our genetic make-up and cannot be changed.
Chronological: This is what happens to our skin through the decades.
Our 20's - Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in our skin and helps to give a “plump and smooth” appearance as it assists the skin in maintaining a moisture balance. We often call it nature's “skin filler”! From our 20's, our levels of HLA (Hyaluronic Acid) decrease, so best to start using products that contain botanical (not synthetic or animal source) hyaluronic acid.
Our 30's - The transfer of moisture from the dermis to the epidermis slows down and fat cells start to shrink. This can result in the more visible appearance of lines and wrinkles. The damage caused by exposure to UV light is taking place deep in the skin. Commit to wearing SPF on a daily basis and having gentle, regular exfoliation - for the key to healthy looking skin.
Our 40's - The loss of collagen and elastin becomes more apparent, in the form of deeper lines and wrinkles. The damage many years ago by UV light starts to show as darker spots and uneven skin tone. Undertake using more intensive, non-chemical peels, skincare products with collagen-boosting ingredients and continue with SPF on a daily basis.
Environmental: External factors such as UV exposure, pollution, diet, lifestyle and chemical overload – all of which all of which cause “Free Radical Damage” - and all of which we can make a positive difference to.
WHAT ARE FREE RADICALS AND HOW DO THEY CAUSE THE SKIN TO AGE?
Free radicals are highly unstable and reactive molecules that damage living cells. These can come from everyday pollution and other common stressors, like the ones listed below:
• UV rays - Up to 80% of free radical damage is caused by the sun. • Everyday air pollutants • Smog • Tobacco • Pesticides
Ever watch a cut apple slice start to brown? That process is called oxidation – and it’s caused by free radical destruction. Oxidation is when free radicals damage parts of the cells, such as proteins, DNA, cell membranes and more. When oxidation occurs, the cells lose their ability to function normally.
As free radical damage occurs, cells and tissues are damaged. The body tries to compensate for this by activating inflammatory pathways. However, inflammation is not restricted to only the damaged areas and it often spills over into surrounding healthy tissue. Inflammation degrades collagen and elastin, which leads to premature ageing.
HOW TO PREVENT FREE RADICAL DAMAGE
Antioxidants are skin’s superhero against free radicals. A diet rich in vitamins and minerals will help but when it comes to skin, topical application will enhance the benefits. Vitamins A, C and E are all potent antioxidants together with Coenzyme Q10 and Alpha Lipoic Acid and are all present in Eminence Organic Skin Care.
Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Serum has a potent dose of Vitamin C and E combined with leafy greens such as kale and spinach to improve skin tone and elasticity whilst hydrolysed hyaluronic acid boosts collagen. This skin protecting super-serum will help, prevent free radical damage and reduce inflammation leaving skin with an ageless look.
If you want to go one step further and double your protection against free radicals, combine Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Serum with Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil.
This lightweight non-greasy oil is an effective facial treatment comprised of a potent blend of Vitamins C and E, including rosehip, jojoba and Seabuckthorn oils to fight free radicals and stimulate collagen production to aid in the prevention of future damage from free radicals.
