Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells to reveal a fresh more glowing complexion.
We lose the top layer of dead skin cells, called the “stratum corneum” about every 30-40 days in a normal skin cell cycle. However, there are times when this natural exfoliating process doesn’t work quite as well as it should and needs a little help!
During the last few weeks of warm summer weather changes in the air are noticeable and your skin doesn’t miss them either! Our routines in our day to day lives go through changes influenced by the weather and shorter days and our skincare routine must change too so changes in both weather and temperature can be managed successfully.
Late summer often leaves our skin dehydrated and suffering the lasting effects of sun exposure. As the tan fades the skin can often be left feeling dry and patchy and as the central heating comes on at home the dehydration gets worse. But don’t lose hope!! Here are some great tips to keep your skin hydrated, glowing and in general tip top condition well into the autumn days ahead.
Tip 1: Start Hydrating with your Cleanser
Go for a cleansing oil or cream cleanser or do a double cleanse. If you’ve never tried a cream cleanser or balm, now is the time to give one a go. The benefits of using these types of cleansing product are two-fold. The skin is left super-clean, but also super soft and not dried out at all with make-up thoroughly dissolved, and pores swept clean. Start with the cleansing oil which will remove makeup as well as surface build up and impurities while restoring moisture leaving the skin fresh, dewy and soft. Stone Crop Cleansing oil is gentle enough to use around the eye area to remove eye make-up. It’s non-greasy and fortified with both nutrient-rich microgreens and brightening stone crop, bringing balance back to the skin.
For the second step of the double cleanse try Calm Skin Chamomile Cleanser perfect for calming down and hydrating skin going through a transition period. Infused with chamomile, arnica and rosemary, this calming cream cleanser gently removes impurities and is perfect for sensitive skin that is prone to redness. An alternative second step in the double cleanse for those of us who like a more squeaky clean feel after cleansing is Kombucha Microbiome Foaming Cleanser which is a liquid-to-foam cleanser featuring micellar technology along with pre, pro and postbiotics to help maintain your skin’s microbiome. It gently removes impurities without over-stripping the skin to reveal a fresh, clean and healthy-looking complexion perfect for this time of year.
Tip 2: Offer your Skin a Daily Massage
Face massage doesn’t need to take ages or be a big hassle, spending just a minute or two a day massaging your skin with a facial oil is not only fabulously beneficial for your complexion, but it’s deeply relaxing too.
Using firm upward strokes all over the face and throat will encourage blood flow and lymphatic drainage giving the skin cells a rush of oxygen and nutrients as well as clearing away toxins and dead skin cells. This will keep you glowing well into the winter months and if you get a little more ambitious you could try a Gua Sha Stone. These are great for improving circulation and lymphatic drainage as well as production of Collagen, water retention reduction, a decrease in puffiness and softening of wrinkles and fine lines. For this time of year Facial Recovery Oil is amazing, it has the nickname “Liquid Gold” due to its toning and hydrating properties. It’s created with precious herbs and nourishing oils to soothe and renew sensitive and aging skin and is suitable for all skin types.
Tip 3: Regular Exfoliation is an October Must
A key component of your autumn cleansing routine, exfoliators are designed to help skin to shed dead, dull cells so that it can radiate a healthy, bright glow. Releasing the dead cells also helps your serum and moisturiser to sink in more easily and reduces the likelihood of dead cells contributing to spots by congesting pores.
We think that exfoliation is best performed twice a week in the autumn as this supports cellular regeneration without risking irritation from over exfoliation. In the Autumn you can’t beat Yam & Pumpkin Enzyme Peel , it accelerates the exfoliation process and removes dead skin cells, reduces the appearance of pigmentation, fine lines and sun damage. This delicious purée of yam and pumpkin leaves skin looking firm and radiant.
Tip 4: Make sure to Moisturise and don’t forget the SPF
Even though there’s a chill in the air the sun is still strong and bright so make sure to still use an SPF, Daily Defense Tinted SPF 50+ is a great choice. Vegan and reef friendly, this all mineral broad spectrum UVA, UVB and blue light protection is in a velvety light-weight formula. Tinted with iron oxides the sheer coverage blurs imperfections and blemishes, leaving a radiant, natural finish. Enriched with nourishing botanicals to infuse your skin with antioxidants and hydration, this formula is ideal for all skin types and wide range or skin tones.
Apply Bakuchiol + Niacinamide Moisturiser either on it’s own or under the Tinted SPF, it’s a lightweight, refreshing gel-cream moisturiser with retinol alternative bakuchiol, delivering hydration, smoothing fine lines, and improving the appearance of large pores. Revitalize your complexion without visible irritation or dryness, day or night and use on any skin type.
Linden Calendula Treatment is a great option for nighttime during the transition of summer to autumn. This treatment cream can be used either as a masque or as a night treatment. The extracts derived from fresh linden and calendula plants deeply nourish and refresh the skin’s appearance, and fine herbal oils and honey restore the look of youthfulness and elasticity.
Tip 5: Keep Lip Care Natural
Like skin, lips can become dry and damaged during the autumn. To prevent this, reach for a lip balm that contains natural waxes and oils to protect, nourish and repair damaged lips. Rosehip and Lemongrass Lip Balm SPF 15 moisturises and protects dry lips. This hydrating lip balm stick with all natural SPF15 defends dry lips against harmful UV exposure, while soothing rosehip oil relieves dryness and rejuvenating lavender restores softness. Dry, weather-ravaged lips are perfectly moisturised and protected from future damage.
Tip 6: Don’t Forget the Hands
Hands are exposed to the elements in autumn too and are particularly prone to dryness, especially in colder weather. Treat yours with Mangosteen Replenishing Hand Cream treat your hands to this luxurious hand cream. With each application, this silky formula gently resurfaces to reveal soft, youthful skin and provides long-lasting hydration.
